Who is Avril Lavigne?

Avril Ramona Lavigne, born September 27, 1984, is a Canadian singer-songwriter widely recognized as a pioneer in pop-punk music. Her influence helped shape the rise of female-driven, punk-inspired pop in the early 2000s. Over her career, she has earned eight Grammy Award nominations.

At just 16 years old, Lavigne secured a two-album deal with Arista Records. Her debut album, Let Go (2002), remains the best-selling album of the 21st century by a Canadian artist. The record produced hit singles like “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi,” solidifying her skate punk image and earning her the moniker “Pop-Punk Queen.” Her sophomore album, Under My Skin (2004), debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and sold 10 million copies globally.

Lavigne’s third studio album, The Best Damn Thing (2007), topped the charts in seven countries and featured the international smash hit “Girlfriend,” her first single to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Her following albums, Goodbye Lullaby (2011) and Avril Lavigne (2013), achieved gold certification in Canada, the United States, and other regions, continuing her commercial success. After exploring a more introspective sound on her sixth album, Head Above Water (2019), she returned to her punk roots with her seventh studio album, Love Sux (2022).
