Who is My Chemical Romance?
My Chemical Romance is an American rock band from New Jersey, known for its powerful influence on 2000s rock and its prominent role in the pop-punk and emo scenes, though the band has distanced itself from the latter label. The current lineup features lead vocalist Gerard Way, lead guitarist Ray Toro, rhythm guitarist Frank Iero, and bassist Mikey Way.
Formed in September 2001 by Gerard, Mikey, Toro, and drummer Matt Pelissier (later joined by Iero), the band signed with Eyeball Records, releasing their debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. The following year, they joined Reprise Records and launched their major-label debut, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, in 2004. After its release, Pelissier was replaced by Bob Bryar. This album achieved commercial success, reaching platinum status within a year.
The band’s popularity skyrocketed with the 2006 release of The Black Parade, a rock opera concept album whose lead single, “Welcome to the Black Parade,” topped the UK singles chart. Despite controversy stirred by negative coverage in the Daily Mail, the album solidified their fanbase. In 2010, they released their fourth album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, with Bryar having left the band prior. Touring keyboardist James Dewees joined in 2012, and during 2012 and 2013, they released Conventional Weapons, a collection of previously recorded singles from 2009. The band announced their breakup on March 22, 2013. In 2014, they released a greatest hits album, May Death Never Stop You, followed by a tenth-anniversary reissue of The Black Parade in 2016.
On October 31, 2019, My Chemical Romance announced a reunion show, which took place on December 20, 2019, in Los Angeles. In January 2020, they revealed plans for additional shows and a Reunion Tour, which, after a two-year COVID-19-related delay, ran from 2022 until early 2023.
